As the self-appointed Loremeister of the FC, I figure everyone's favorite bumbling "villain" would be a good starting point for an in-depth look into some of the IRL and Final Fantasy references that have made their way into Eorzea.
First, for who Gilgamesh was in our own world we need to go back to the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Uruk. Our man Greg was the main star in mankind's oldest existing literary work: The Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh was a demigod king who was quite fond of evoking his "right" to a bride's first night. The husbands weren't too happy about this and prayed to the gods. In response, the gods fashioned Enkidu - a super powerful beastman that was created to serve Gilgamesh some humble pie. The two meet up, get into a week long fight, and of course become BFFs after acknowledging each other's strength. They have some adventures, kill a few monsters, and piss off the gods which ends up getting old Enkidu killed from a divine illness.
Gilgamesh doesn't take the death of his pal Enkidu well and leaves Uruk to find a sage who survived a great primordial flood, and was given immortality as a reward. The sage tasks Gilgamesh with staying awake for a week straight, which he fails of course. His only other option for immortality is from a unique leaf which could be brewed into tea or something which would grant him eternal life as well. Gilgamesh finds this leaf, but has it stolen from him by a snake while he is bathing.
Admitting defeat in his search for eternal life, Gilgamesh makes his way back home to Uruk. Upon seeing the great walls of the city (which he had built himself) he realizes that even though one may die, they always live on in their deeds.
…and as for the Final Fantasy incarnation of GIlgamesh…well, he starts out as loud-mouthed subordinate of Exdeath in FF5. He's fought a few times as a boss (his boss battle theme - Clash on the Big Bridge - is taken from…a fight with him on a big bridge) before he's banished to the Dimensional Rift for his incompetence after mistaking the Excalibur for the Excalipoor. He eventually meets up with Bartz and company in the Rift, but more as a friendly rival than a straight up bad guy, even giving up his life to defeat a powerful fiend of the Void called Necrophobe.
Since his first appearance in FF5, he's usually been something of an over-the-top ham that is always searching for better weapons…which usually turn out to be knock-offs. Gilgamesh has appeared in FF5, FF8 (as a summon), FF9 (as Alleyway Jack), FF11 (pirate leader, not much to do with his other incarnations), FF12 (as an Elite Mark), FF13-2 (DLC boss), and of course in FF14 as Hildibrand's goofy rival. He has also showed up in the remakes of FF1 and FF6, making him the most recurring named character in the series. It's also implied that every version of him from the various games is actually the one that made his debut in FF5.
Anyways, that's all I have to say about Gilgamesh (…for now at least!). Hope you enjoy the read! Don't be afraid to reply with things I might have missed or anything else like that~
I appreciate that you decided to post such the interesting pitch here. I would like to cover this topic for http://www.jogg.se/Bloggar/BloggInlagg.aspx?id=63839 so it definitely can be very useful for me. Thank you so much!
